The Polkadot Challenge™ - "Spud" Riley Memorial Gran Fondo - 17th June 2012

Introduction

The Polkadot Challenge™ - "Spud" Riley Memorial Gran Fondo is a 100 mile bike ride, organised by WILL'S WHEELS CC on the lines of the classic Italian Gran Fondo events. It starts in Woodford Village 10 miles South of Manchester and covers 100 miles through Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, with 16 official climbs varying in length from 1/2 mile to 5mls with gradients up to 20%. There is a 54 mile option for those requiring an easier ride. The whole route and all the climbs are fully signposted and at the start of each climb is a sign showing its number, name and distance to the summit. Food and drinks are provided at two feeding/control points on the route.

2012 ride details

The 2012 ride will take place on Sunday June 17th starting, as in previous years, from the Woodford Community Centre situated on the A5102 between Bramhall and Wilmslow. The start will be from 8am onwards.

2012 on the day procedures

On arrival at HQ park your car as directed by the marshals. Then sign on inside HQ between 7.15am and 8.45am. Signing on sheets are in alphabetical order of surname and set out on tables.

When you have signed in you will be given a Number with your personal Timing Chip incorporated in it. This must be fixed to your handlebars with the ties provided.

When you are ready to start proceed to the timing mat in the start area, here groups of up to 20 people will be started at 2 minute intervals from 8:00am onwards.

When you have finished the ride make sure you cross the timing mat and your number will be removed by the marshals. Make sure you inform the marshal that you have ridden the 100 mile course or the shorter one. You can then go into HQ for free hot and cold drinks and snacks. Your time will be displayed on the large monitor as you finish.

Please note - it is imperative that you return your number and timing chip to HQ, if you are unable to return it there will be a charge of £5.00 levied by the timing company.

Christies

The 2010 ride raised £8,000 which has been donated to the Urology Department at Christie Hospital. To date the The Polkadot Challenge™ - "Spud" Riley Memorial Gran Fondo rides have raised £70,000 which has all been donated to the Christie Hospital.
